GIF to APNG converts an animated GIF into an APNG (animated PNG) file with ImageMagick on our server. It changes the container so the animation can be used where APNG is required; it does not add colours the GIF never had.

APNG is an extension of PNG that stores animation frames. Compared with GIF it can hold full colour and smooth, partial transparency, and all current browsers play it. Some platforms ask for APNG specifically; LINE's animated stickers, for example, are submitted as APNG.

When the source is a GIF, though, the frames are already limited to 256 colours with hard transparency, so the APNG will look the same as the GIF rather than better. The GIF is uploaded over HTTPS, ImageMagick writes the APNG, and the temporary files are deleted afterwards.

    Select a .gif up to 100 MB.

  2. Convert

    Press Run; longer animations take more time.

  3. Download the .apng

    Save the file. Rename it to .png if the platform you upload to asks for a .png extension.

What is APNG?

APNG, or animated PNG, is a PNG file that contains several frames played as an animation. Browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge play it, and plain PNG viewers show the first frame.

Will my animation look better as APNG?

No. APNG can store full colour, but a GIF source only has 256 colours per frame and on/off transparency, so the result looks like the GIF. For better quality, make the APNG from the original artwork.

Why does my APNG not move in my photo app?

Many photo viewers only show the first frame. Open the file in a web browser to see the animation.

The site wants a .png file. Can I rename it?

Yes. An APNG is a valid PNG, so renaming .apng to .png is fine and animation-aware software will still play it.

How is my GIF handled?

Over an encrypted connection to our machine, where ImageMagick rebuilds the frames. The upload and the APNG are wiped from the working directory once your download starts.
