GIF to AVIF
Convert animated GIF first frame to AVIF.
Convert animated GIF first frame to AVIF.
GIF to AVIF takes the first frame of a GIF and saves it as a still AVIF image, using ImageMagick on our server. Animated GIFs lose their animation: only frame one is kept.
This is a deliberate single-frame conversion. ImageMagick reads frame 0 of the GIF and encodes it as AVIF, which is handy when you want a light still image, such as a thumbnail or poster frame, from an animated GIF.
Keep expectations realistic on quality: a GIF has at most 256 colours, and AVIF cannot add back colours that were never there. What you gain is a modern, compact file. The GIF is sent to our server over HTTPS and the temporary copy is erased right after conversion.

No. The tool keeps only the first frame and saves it as a still AVIF. To keep the motion in a modern format, convert the GIF to MP4 instead.
Some GIFs start with an empty or faded frame. Since only frame one is used, that is what you get. Trim the GIF so the frame you want comes first, then convert again.
No. A GIF stores at most 256 colours, and the AVIF reproduces what is there. The benefit is a compact modern file, not better colour.
It is uploaded over HTTPS to our server, converted in an isolated temporary folder and deleted as soon as you receive the AVIF.
