GIF to MP4 converts an animated GIF into an MP4 video with ffmpeg on our server, using the yuv420p pixel format that phones and social sites expect. The MP4 is usually much smaller than the GIF and plays smoothly.

GIF is an inefficient way to store motion: a few seconds can weigh several megabytes. Video codecs such as H.264 compress the same animation far better, which is why Twitter, Facebook and many chat apps quietly turn uploaded GIFs into videos anyway.

ffmpeg reads the GIF frames and writes an MP4 with yuv420p colour, rounds the width and height down to even numbers (a requirement of the encoder), and places the index at the start of the file so it can begin playing before it fully downloads. The GIF is sent over HTTPS and the server copies are deleted after conversion.

Why convert a GIF to MP4?

To make it smaller and more widely accepted. An MP4 of the same animation is often a fraction of the GIF's size, and it can be uploaded to Instagram and other sites that refuse GIFs.

Will the MP4 loop like a GIF?

Not automatically. MP4 files play once unless the player loops them. Websites can loop it with the video tag's loop attribute, and many social apps loop short clips on their own.

What happens to a transparent background?

MP4 video has no transparency, so see-through areas are filled with a solid colour, usually black.

Why is my video one pixel narrower?

The H.264 video format needs even width and height. If your GIF is, say, 481 pixels wide, it becomes 480.

Is my GIF stored after conversion?

No. ffmpeg works on a scratch copy, and the whole scratch directory is removed the moment your MP4 has been handed back.

Does it cost anything?

No. It is free, with a fair-use limit of 10 server conversions in 5 minutes.
