HEIC to AVIF converts an iPhone HEIC or HEIF photo into AVIF on our server, using ImageMagick with libheif. Both formats compress photos efficiently, but browsers widely support AVIF while very few show HEIC.

HEIC is great on the phone and poor on the web: most browsers other than Safari cannot display it. Converting to JPG fixes that but makes the file bigger. AVIF is a middle path, a compact modern format that Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16 or later all show.

The photo is sent over HTTPS to our server, decoded by libheif, written as AVIF by ImageMagick and returned to you. The isolated temporary folder used for the job is deleted right after.

Why AVIF instead of JPG?

AVIF is usually much smaller than a JPG of the same photo and is displayed by current browsers. JPG is still the safer choice for email attachments and upload forms that check file types.

Is my photo stored on your server?

Only for the few seconds the conversion takes. It is processed in a temporary folder that is deleted as soon as the AVIF is sent back.

Can Windows open AVIF?

Windows 10 and 11 can open AVIF with Microsoft's free AV1 extension, and any current browser displays it. Some older photo viewers cannot.

Does it keep the photo's resolution?

Yes, the AVIF has the same pixel width and height as the main image in your HEIC.

Is there a free limit?

You can run up to 10 server conversions in any 5-minute window, at no cost.
