HEIC to PNG decodes an iPhone HEIC or HEIF photo in your browser and saves it as a PNG, a lossless format that will not add new compression each time you edit and save. Expect the PNG to be several times larger than the HEIC.

JPG is the usual choice for sharing an iPhone photo, but every save in JPG throws away a little more detail. PNG stores every pixel exactly, which suits a picture you are about to crop, retouch, place in a design or hand to a print shop.

The trade-off is size. A 12-megapixel HEIC of about 2 MB can easily become a PNG of 15 MB or more, because PNG is built for exactness rather than small files. Choose HEIC to JPG instead if you only need to send or upload the photo.

PNG or JPG: which should I pick for an iPhone photo?

Pick PNG if you will edit the photo further or need exact pixels; pick JPG if you just want to share or upload it. JPG files are far smaller, PNG files are lossless.

Why is the PNG so large?

PNG compresses without losing anything, which does not work as well on camera photos with millions of subtly different colours. A PNG of a phone photo is often 5 to 10 times the size of the HEIC.

Does the photo get uploaded?

No. Decoding and saving both happen in your browser, on your device.

Will a PNG from HEIC have a transparent background?

No. iPhone photos have no transparency, so the PNG is fully opaque. You can remove the background afterwards with a background-removal tool.

Can I convert Live Photos?

The still image of a Live Photo is a HEIC and can be converted. The short video part is a separate file and is not included.
