JPG to AVIF re-encodes a JPG photo in the AVIF format using ImageMagick with libheif on our server. AVIF usually stores a photo in noticeably fewer bytes than JPG at similar visual quality, which helps web pages load faster.
AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. On photos it often reaches the same look as a JPG at a fraction of the size, which is why site builders use it for product galleries and blog images where every kilobyte counts on mobile data.
Your JPG is sent over HTTPS to our server, where ImageMagick decodes it and writes an AVIF of the same pixel size. The temporary files are deleted as soon as the result is returned to you. Because a JPG has already been compressed once, the saving depends on how heavily it was compressed in the first place.

On our server. The JPG travels over HTTPS and ImageMagick turns it into AVIF inside a throwaway working folder, which is wiped once your download is on its way. Files can be up to 100 MB.
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (from Safari 16) display AVIF. For very old browsers, websites usually keep a JPG fallback using the HTML picture element.
It varies with the photo and how compressed the JPG already was. Large, lightly compressed photos often shrink a lot; small, heavily compressed JPGs may shrink only a little.
Not at the moment. The tool uses the encoder's default quality, so compare the result with your original before replacing it on a live site.
Usually not. Many phones and apps still expect JPG. AVIF is mainly useful on websites you control.
