JPG to BMP decodes a JPG photo and stores its pixels in an uncompressed 24-bit BMP file, inside your browser. The bitmap is much larger than the JPG but can be read by very simple software and hardware.
A JPG is a compact, compressed description of a photo; reading it needs a decoder. A BMP is the opposite: plain rows of colour values that a few lines of code can read. Converting a JPG to BMP unpacks the photo once, so the receiving program does not have to.
The picture itself does not change. Any softness or blockiness from the JPG compression is copied into the bitmap as it is, and the BMP simply holds those pixels in raw form.
Choose the photo
Select a .jpg or .jpeg file with the upload button.
Convert
Press Run JPG to BMP; the browser decodes the JPG and writes the bitmap rows.
Download
Save the .bmp file, keeping in mind it will be several times larger than the JPG.
Example: an 800 × 600 photo
An 800 × 600 JPG of 80 to 150 KB becomes a BMP of exactly 1,440,054 bytes (800 × 3 × 600 plus the 54-byte header), about 1.4 MB, whatever the photo shows.
No, it will look identical. BMP stores what the JPG decoder produced, including any compression marks; it just stops new loss from happening.
Roughly width × height × 3 bytes plus a 54-byte header. A 12-megapixel phone photo becomes about 36 MB.
Mostly older Windows software, some industrial and hobby electronics tools, and teaching code that reads pixels directly. Modern apps and websites prefer JPG, PNG or WEBP.
No. Decoding and BMP writing both happen in your browser tab, so the photo stays on your phone or computer.
Yes, with BMP to JPG. Each JPG save is lossy, so for repeated round trips keep your original JPG instead.
