JPG to GIF turns a JPG into a still, single-frame GIF with ImageMagick on our server. Because GIF allows only 256 colours, photos can show banding or a speckled look, and the file is often larger than the JPG.

People usually search for this when an upload box insists on GIF, or when they want a still image to edit in a GIF animation tool. It does not create motion: one JPG becomes one GIF frame.

A camera photo can contain hundreds of thousands of distinct colours. ImageMagick reduces them to a 256-colour palette and uses dithering, a fine dot pattern, to imitate the missing shades. Your file is sent over HTTPS, converted, and the temporary copy is deleted right away.

Will my photo move after converting?

No. A single JPG becomes a single-frame GIF that looks like a normal still picture. For a moving GIF you need several frames, such as from a short video.

Why does the sky look striped or dotty?

GIF is limited to 256 colours. Smooth gradients like skies need many shades, so the converter approximates them with bands or a dot pattern called dithering.

Why is the GIF larger than my JPG?

JPG is designed for photos and compresses them very efficiently. GIF is designed for simple graphics, so a photo usually takes more space as a GIF.

What happens to my file?

It goes to our server over HTTPS, ImageMagick converts it in a temporary folder, and both copies are deleted right after the download is sent.

Should I use GIF for a profile photo?

Only if the site insists. JPG or PNG will look better and load faster in almost every case.
