PNG to AVIF converts a PNG into an AVIF image with ImageMagick on our server. AVIF supports transparency like PNG but uses lossy compression, so large PNGs, especially screenshots and photos saved as PNG, usually become much smaller.

PNG is lossless, which is why a full-page screenshot or a photo saved as PNG can weigh several megabytes. AVIF is one of the few compact formats that also keep an alpha channel, so a logo or cut-out with a transparent background can stay see-through after conversion.

The PNG is uploaded over HTTPS, encoded by ImageMagick with libheif, and the temporary copies are removed straight after you receive the AVIF. The canvas size stays the same.

Does AVIF keep a transparent background?

Yes, AVIF can store transparency, so see-through parts of your PNG should stay see-through. Check the preview on a dark page background to be sure the edges look right.

Will text in a screenshot stay sharp?

Mostly, but AVIF is lossy, so very fine text or one-pixel lines can blur a little. For pixel-perfect UI images, PNG or lossless WEBP may suit you better.

How is my file handled?

It is sent over HTTPS to our server, converted in a temporary folder and deleted as soon as the AVIF is returned. Maximum size is 100 MB.

PNG to AVIF or PNG to WEBP?

AVIF often gives smaller files; WEBP is supported by more older apps and devices. For a modern website, AVIF is a good choice; for wide compatibility, WEBP is safer.

Is it free?

Yes. There is a fair-use limit of 10 server conversions every 5 minutes.
