PSD to AI flattens a Photoshop file and places the merged image inside a PDF-based file with an .ai extension, using ImageMagick on our server. Illustrator can open it, but the content is one embedded pixel image, not editable vector artwork.

Modern Illustrator files are built on PDF, and Illustrator happily opens PDF-compatible .ai files. This tool uses that: ImageMagick reads the PSD's composite image, writes it to a PDF page and names the file .ai. It is a convenient way to hand a Photoshop design to someone working in Illustrator.

Be clear about what you are getting. Layers, editable text and effects are flattened, and nothing is converted into vector paths, so scaling it up will still blur just like the PSD would. For a traced vector, use PSD to SVG instead. The upload travels over HTTPS and our server deletes it with the output once the job is done.

Will I be able to edit the shapes in Illustrator?

No. The .ai contains a single embedded image of your design. You can move, scale or crop it, and use Illustrator's Image Trace to vectorise it yourself, but the shapes are not separate paths.

Is it a real Illustrator file?

It is a PDF-based file with an .ai extension, the same underlying structure Illustrator uses for compatible files. Illustrator opens it, but it does not contain Illustrator-specific editing data.

PSD to AI or PSD to SVG?

Choose AI to keep the full-colour design as an image inside an Illustrator-friendly file. Choose SVG when you need actual vector outlines and can accept a one-colour trace.

Do my layers survive?

No, the PSD is flattened to its merged image before it is placed in the file.

How is my PSD handled?

ImageMagick on our machine opens it from a short-lived scratch folder; the PSD and the generated .ai are both wiped once your browser has the file.
