TIFF to PNG decodes the first page of a TIFF file in your browser and saves it as a lossless PNG. Pixels and transparency are kept exactly, and the PNG can be shown in any browser, document or app.

TIFF and PNG are both lossless, so this conversion is about compatibility rather than size or quality. Browsers, phones, Google Docs and many websites cannot show TIFF, but they all handle PNG.

Choose PNG over JPG when the TIFF contains line drawings, maps, diagrams, signatures or a transparent background, where JPG compression would soften edges or fill transparency with white.

Will I lose quality going from TIFF to PNG?

No for normal 8-bit TIFFs: PNG is lossless, so every pixel is copied exactly. Only 16-bit TIFFs lose some colour precision, as they are reduced to 8 bits per channel.

Will the PNG be smaller than the TIFF?

Often yes for uncompressed TIFFs, but not always. If the TIFF was already compressed, the PNG can be similar in size. For a small photo file, TIFF to JPG is the better route.

Is the transparent background kept?

Yes. If the TIFF has an alpha channel, the PNG keeps it.

What about multi-page TIFFs?

Only the first page is converted. Split the TIFF into single pages in your scanner software first if you need all of them.

Is my file sent to a server?

No. The TIFF is decoded and the PNG encoded inside your browser tab.
