Add Page Numbers writes a number on every page of a PDF, in one of six positions (top or bottom; left, centre or right). The default format is "{n} / {total}", such as 3 / 12, and you can change the wording and the starting number.

Teachers, examiners and office desks ask for numbered pages because loose printouts get mixed up. A thesis, a tender file or an assignment combined from several PDFs often has no numbers, or numbers that restart in every section.

The number is drawn 24 points (about a third of an inch) from the page edge in 11-point dark grey text. In the format box, {n} becomes the page number and {total} becomes the number of pages in the file, so "Page {n} of {total}" prints as Page 4 of 20.

  1. Upload your PDF

    Choose the finished document, ideally after any merging or reordering.

  2. Choose position, start and format

    Pick one of six positions, set Start at (default 1) and edit the format, for example Page {n} or পৃষ্ঠা {n}.

  3. Number and download

    Press Run Add Page Numbers and download the file ending in -numbered.pdf.

Example: starting at page 5

A 10-page chapter that belongs after a 4-page front section uses Start at 5 and format "{n}". The pages show 5 to 14. Note that {total} always means the pages in this file, so "{n} / {total}" would show 5 / 10 on the first page.

How do I write "Page 1 of 10"?

Type Page {n} of {total} in the format box. {n} becomes the page number and {total} the total number of pages.

Can I leave the cover page without a number?

Not directly, since every page is numbered. A workaround: split the cover off with Split PDF, number the rest with Start at 2, then merge the cover back in front with Merge PDF.

Can the numbers be in Bangla digits (১, ২, ৩)?

The label can be Bangla, such as পৃষ্ঠা {n}, but the number itself is written in Western digits, so it prints as পৃষ্ঠা 1.

Why does {total} not match when I start from 5?

{total} always counts the pages in the file you uploaded. If you start at 5, use just {n} or write the real final number yourself, for example {n} / 14.

Is my file processed online?

It is processed in your browser. The PDF is numbered on your device and is not uploaded anywhere.
