PDF to MOBI turns a text-based PDF into a MOBI ebook with Calibre on our server, for older Kindle devices and reader apps that use the MOBI format. Text reflows on the screen, but complex layouts and scanned pages do not convert well.

Some people still read on early Kindle models, or use apps and devices that understand MOBI but not EPUB. For them, a MOBI version of a PDF is far easier to read than a full A4 page squeezed onto a small e-ink screen.

Calibre converts the PDF using its default settings, rebuilding paragraphs so the text can rewrap. For newer Kindles, AZW3 is the more capable Kindle format, and Amazon's Send to Kindle service now prefers EPUB, so choose MOBI mainly when your device needs it.

  1. Upload the PDF

    Use a PDF with selectable text; scanned pages will not reflow.

  2. Convert to MOBI

    Calibre on our server creates the .mobi file, usually within two minutes.

  3. Copy to your Kindle

    Connect the Kindle by USB and place the file in its documents folder, then eject it safely.

Should I choose MOBI or AZW3?

Pick AZW3 for any Kindle made in the last decade; it keeps formatting better. Choose MOBI only for very old Kindles or apps that ask specifically for MOBI.

Can I email the MOBI to my Kindle?

Amazon stopped accepting MOBI files through Send to Kindle. Copy the file over USB, or send an EPUB instead, which Amazon converts for you.

Where is the conversion done?

On our server, where Calibre does the work. Your PDF travels there encrypted, Calibre writes the MOBI next to it, and both copies are wiped once the download reaches you.

Why do tables look broken on my Kindle?

MOBI has very limited layout support and the PDF's table is rebuilt from positioned text, so columns often collapse into lines. Keep the original PDF for tables.

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

No. Without real text, there is nothing to reflow, and the result would be hard to read.
