PDF to TIFF converts every page of a PDF into a 200 DPI colour TIFF image on our server using pdftoppm. A one-page PDF returns a single .tif file; a longer PDF returns a ZIP with one TIFF per page.

TIFF is the format of document archives, scanning systems, fax software and some print workflows. Records offices, libraries and older document management systems frequently want page images as TIFF rather than PDF or JPG.

The conversion needs desktop-grade software. The PDF travels over an encrypted connection to shomoy.io, where pdftoppm (part of the Poppler PDF toolkit) draws each page at 200 DPI; the TIFFs come back to you and the working folder on the server is wiped as soon as the response is built. Each file may be as large as 100 MB, and one visitor can start ten conversions in any five-minute window.

  2. Convert on the server

    Start the conversion; long documents can take a little while because every page is drawn at 200 DPI.

  3. Download the result

    You receive name.tif for a single page, or name.zip with page-1.tif, page-2.tif and so on for several pages.

At 200 DPI an A4 page becomes about 1654 × 2339 pixels. Stored as an uncompressed colour TIFF that is roughly 11-12 MB per page, so a 10-page PDF can produce a ZIP of over 100 MB.

Is my PDF uploaded?

Yes. Rendering TIFF needs server software, so the file is transferred over HTTPS, converted, and its temporary copy is erased immediately afterwards.

Will I get one multi-page TIFF?

No. Each page is saved as its own TIFF, and several pages are packed into a ZIP. Most archive systems accept a folder of single-page TIFFs.

What resolution are the TIFFs?

200 DPI, in colour. That is a common resolution for document archives and readable printing.

Why are the TIFF files so big?

The pages are written without compression, which is what many archive and fax systems expect. An A4 page is roughly 11-12 MB. If size matters, PDF to PNG or PDF to JPG gives much smaller images.

Is there a size or usage limit?

A single PDF may be at most 100 MB, and you can run ten conversions in five minutes before the tool asks you to wait.
