PDF to Word turns a text-based PDF into an editable .docx file with LibreOffice on our server. The text becomes editable, but the layout is rebuilt approximately, and scanned PDFs have no text to convert.

A PDF is built for printing, not editing: each line of text is placed at a fixed spot on the page, with no idea of paragraphs or table cells. Converting back to Word means guessing that structure again, so the result is a starting point you tidy up, not a perfect copy.

On our server LibreOffice imports the PDF into its word processor and saves it as .docx. Text you could select in the PDF becomes text you can edit. Where the original had columns, text boxes or complex tables, expect lines placed in frames or spacing that needs fixing by hand.

    Open it and try selecting a word. If you cannot, it is a scan and needs OCR first.

  2. Upload the PDF

    Choose the file; it is sent to our server for conversion.

  3. Convert to DOCX

    LibreOffice imports the pages and saves a Word file. Large files can take up to three minutes.

  4. Edit in Word

    Open the .docx in Microsoft Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs and fix spacing or frames where needed.

Why does my Word file look messy?

A PDF stores text as positioned lines, not paragraphs. When LibreOffice rebuilds the document, it may put text in frames or break lines differently. Simple single-column documents convert most cleanly; brochures and multi-column layouts need the most cleanup.

Can it convert a scanned PDF to Word?

No. A scan is an image of a page, so there is no text to turn into Word text. Use an OCR tool, such as our Extract Text from PDF with OCR, to get the words first.

Is my PDF kept on the server?

No. It travels over HTTPS to our server, gets converted in a short-lived temporary folder, and that folder is cleared once your .docx has been delivered.

Will tables become real Word tables?

Sometimes, but often not. Tables in PDFs are just lines and text positioned near each other, so they may come out as separate text blocks. For number tables, PDF to CSV can be easier to work with.

Can I open the result in Google Docs?

Yes. Upload the .docx to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs.
