About Margin & Markup Calculator ·

Start from your unit cost and one of three things — a target margin %, a markup % or a selling price — and the calculator returns the selling price, profit per unit, margin and markup. Add fixed costs and it also shows how many units you must sell to break even.

Margin and markup describe the same profit from two sides, and mixing them up is a common pricing mistake. Markup is profit as a share of cost: buy at 400, sell at 500, and the markup is 25%. Margin is profit as a share of the selling price: the same sale is a 20% margin. A shop that wants a 40% margin needs a 66.67% markup, not 40%.

The formulas used are price = cost ÷ (1 − margin) when you start from margin, price = cost × (1 + markup) when you start from markup, and breakeven units = fixed costs ÷ profit per unit, rounded up to a whole unit.

How to use it · কীভাবে ব্যবহার করবেন

Pricing products on a Facebook page
An online seller who buys a dress at ৳400 can test whether ৳500, ৳550 or ৳600 gives the margin they need after delivery costs.
Wholesale to retail
A trader quoting retailers can turn a required margin into the exact price to print on the list.
Checking if an ad budget pays off
Enter the month's boost budget as a fixed cost and see how many orders it takes to cover it.

Example: cost 50, target margin 40%

Price = 50 ÷ (1 − 0.40) = 83.33. Profit per unit is 33.33, and the matching markup is 66.67%. With 1,000 in fixed costs, breakeven is 1,000 ÷ 33.33 = 30 units (rounded up). From the other side, a ৳400 item with a 25% markup sells at ৳500, which is a 20% margin.

What you get

  • Three ways to start: from margin %, markup % or selling price

  • Breakeven units from optional fixed costs, rounded up
  • Currencies: USD, AED, BDT, EUR
  • Results to two decimal places, with one-click copy

Questions people ask ·

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Markup compares profit to cost; margin compares profit to the selling price. Cost 400 and price 500 means a 25% markup but a 20% margin. The calculator shows both so you can quote whichever your buyer or accountant asks for.

What markup gives a 40% margin?

A 66.67% markup. Choose Cost + Margin %, enter 40, and the Markup line shows 66.67% for any cost.

How is breakeven worked out?

Fixed costs are divided by profit per unit and rounded up to the next whole unit. With 1,000 fixed costs and 33.33 profit per unit, you need 30 sales.

Why does a 100% margin give a strange price?

Because price = cost ÷ (1 − margin), and at 100% that divides by zero. No real price makes all of the selling price profit unless cost is zero. Keep margins below 100%.

Should I include VAT and delivery in cost?

Include every cost you pay per unit, such as packaging, courier charges or marketplace commission, so the margin reflects what you actually keep. VAT you collect on behalf of the government is usually kept separate; the Sales Tax & VAT Calculator can help there.

Is it free and private?

Yes. No account is needed, and the numbers are calculated and remembered in your own browser only.
